The M.B.326M was one of a number of derivitives of the original M.B.326
trainer which first flew in 1957. 100 of these early models were built
for the Italian Air Force, followed by the M.B.326B, 8 of which were
built for Tunisia; the M.B.326F, 9 built for Ghana, and the M.B.326H, 97
of which were built for the Australian military by the Commonwealth
Aircraft Corporation in Australia. 4 M.B.326D’s were built for Alitalia
as airline pilot trainers. The M.B.326M ‘s were built in Italy for the
South African Air Force and these were followed by 125 similar aircraft
which were licence-built by the Atlas Aircraft Corporation in South
Africa and known as Atlas Impala Mk.1. A more powerful version, the
M.B.326GB, powered by a 4000 lb.s.t.(17.79kW) Rolls-Royce was first
flown in 1967 and exported to Argentina (8), Zambia (20), and Zaire
(17). A similar version, the M.B.326E, was built for the Italian Air
Force. Also similar was the M.B.326GC which was built under licence in
Brazil as the Embraer AT-26 Xavante. 167 of these were built for the
Brazilian Air Force and 3 for the Togo Air Force. The M.B.326K single
seat close support version first flew in 1970 and was built in small
numbers for South Africa, Ghana, Tunisia and Dubai. The M.B.326L is the
2 seat version. South Africa undertook licence production of the
M.B.326K as the Atlas Impala 2. 125 of these were built.The last M.B.326
was built in Brazil in 1983 and today a number of versions are flown in
civil markings in the USA.
