The Model 680T was the
first of the turboprop powered Commander twins and was quickly followed
by the Model 680V (36 built) which had an increased maximum take-off
weight of 9400lb(4267kg). The next model was the 680W Turbo 11 Commander
(46 built) which featured a pointed nose and new engine nacelles. The
Model 681 Hawk Commander (43 built) first flown in 1964 , was powered by
2x 605shp (451kW) Garretts and had a redesigned nose. The Model 681B
Turbo commander (29 built) was the economy version of the Hawk
Commander. The Aero Commander division of North American Aviation Inc.
merged with Rockwell Standard Corporation in 1967 and all subsequent
Commander twins until 1981 when the rights to the design were sold to
Gulfstream American Corporation were designated Rockwell Commanders, and
are described in this volume under Rockwell. These early turboprop
powered Twin Commanders are still flying in some numbers with
approximately 25 Model 680T; 20 Model 680V; 25 Model 680W; and 15 Model
681 Hawk Commanders remaining active.
