The Construzioni Aeronautiche Giovanni Agusta was founded in 1907 by
Giovanni Agusta and built a number of aircraft types prior to WW 1. In
1952 the company took out a licence for the Bell 47G and the first
example built by the company made its first flight in 1954. More than
700 Bell 47G’s were eventually built giving the company experience in
helicopter construction as well as a good customer base. They continued
to build Bell helicopters under licence and have completed 556 examples
of the AB206A Jetranger and 184 examples of the AB206B Jetranger 2.
Other models built under licence have been the AB204B (238 built),
AB205A (485 built), AB205A-1 (17 built) and the AB212 (224 built).
Originally named the Hirundo, the A.109 prototype first flew in 1971.
The production version was the A.109A(152 built) which had a MTOW of
5400lb (2451kg). This was followed by the A.109A Mk.11 and in 1989 the
A.109C (80+ built) powered by 2x 450shp (335kW) Allisons and a MTOW of
5997lb(2722kg)The A.109Max is a medevac version with bulged side doors.
The A.109K2 was a hot and high version with a rescue hoist, fixed
undercarriage and a tail skid instead of a ventral fin. It is powered by
2x 771shp(575kW) Turbomecas. The Agusta A.109 has become an extremely
popular and versatile helicopter with examples operating worldwide. In
July 2000 Agusta merged with Westland Helicopters of England to form
AgustaWestland, both companies sharing their experience and resources.
