Val was the code name given to the Aichi D3A by the allies during World War 11. Derived from the earlier D3A1 (470 built) first flown in 1936 and powered by a 1080hp(810kW) Mitsubishi, the D3A2 saw active service in the Pacific theatre and towards the end of the war was used as a Kamikaze aircraft. A number of wrecks were salvaged in the 1960’s and rebuilt to flying condition and at least one, which was rebuilt in Canada, remains active in the US.
