Airbus Industrie was established in 1970 to
develop a European designed wide-body airliner. The Model A300B1 ( 2
built) first flew in 1971 and was followed by the production version,
the A300B2 in 1974. In 1978 the American company, Eastern Airlines,
ordered 38 Model A300B4’s and opened the door to the US and world
markets for the Airbus series. The Model A300B4 had increased fuel
capacity allowing for a range of 3340miles (5375km). The B2 and B4 were
available in several variants including the Model A300B2-100 initial
version; the Model A300B2-200 with wing root Kruger leading edge flaps
and strengthened undercarriage; the Model A300B2-300 with increased fuel
capacity; the Model A300B4-100 with extra fuel and strengthened
undercarriage; the Model A300B4-200 with transcontinental range. Another
variant was the Model A300C4 convertible freighter version with upper
deck cargo door on port side. Production of the Airbus A300B2/B4 series
ended in 1984 and the company turned to the manufacture of the larger
Model A300-600. About 200 examples of the Airbus A300B2/B4 remain
active.
