The Model A320 was a single-aisled design as opposed to the twin-aisled
earlier designs. An extremely reliable and economical aircraft, the A320
is the most successful type in the Airbus range. The Model A320-100 (21
built) was followed by the A320-200 which had an increase in maximum
take-off weight and featured winglets. Alternative engine installations
are offered to operators, including the 26,500lb.s.t.(117kN)
Internationals. Ordered by numerous major airlines including Air France,
the launch customer, Braniff, Condor and Northwest, the A320 was the
first commercial aircraft to use the fly-by-wire flight control system.
The Models A319, A320 and A321 share a common pilot type rating. The
best known of the Airbus family, the A320 can be seen at airports
worldwide.
