The replica Albatros B-11 was built by the Historischer Flugzeugbau
Furstenwalde at Furstenwalde, east of Berlin. This association of
aircraft enthusiasts was formed in 1998 and intends to build a number of
flying replicas of early German aircraft. They have already built
examples of the Grader Eindecker, the Etrich Taube and the Farman MF7.
The original Albatros B-11 made its first flight in 1914 powered by a
110hp(82kW) Benz Bz.11 engine. It was a tandem two seat reconnaissance
aircraft, with the pilot occupying the rear seat, which saw service on
both the Eastern and Western fronts until 1915, after which it was
relegated to a training role. The Furstenwalde group has also begun
construction of a replica Fokker D.V11 and have ambitions to build a
replica of the Zeppelin Staaken R.V1 heavy bomber which had a wingspan
of 138’5.5”(42.2m). The latter project would be built at a reduced
scale.
