The Argo 2-seat sport trainer was the production version of the Hess
Bluebird Sport which had first flown in 1925. The Bluebird Sport was
built by the Hess Aircraft Company of Wyandotte, Michigan; this company
moving to Alliance, Ohio in 1928 was renamed the Alliance Aircraft
Corporation. As well as building the Argo the company also constructed
the 7 cylinder Hess Warrior engines. After the death of one of the Hess
brothers in a flying accident in 1929 and with the onset of the
depression years, the company went bankrupt in 1929. Ten years later the
same factory in Alliance was used to build the early Taylorcraft series
of light aircraft. At least one Argo remains airworthy.
