The A-2 Aircoupe was an all metal version of the Erco (Engineering and
Research Corporation) Ercoupe 415C. Alon Inc. of Kansas bought the
rights to the Ercoupe from Air Products Inc. in 1963. Alon (Allen
-Higdon) was a company formed by Beech through its plant manager, John
Allen and its accounts manager, Lee Higdon. Beech subsequently purchased
the company. The A-2 had a number of major differences from the Erco
design including an all metal structure, a sliding bubble canopy,
stronger undercarriage and improved instrumentation. The A-2A (64 built)
introduced a spring steel undercarriage. The original Ercoupe was
designed by Fred Weick, assistant chief of the NACA aerodynamics
division who went on to design the Piper PA-28 Cherokee among others. A
large number of Alon A-2’s and A-2A’s remain active particularly in the
United States and Canada.
