The AN-24 was designed primarily as a feederliner for Aeroflot and was
eventually exported to other airlines such as Air Mali, Lebanese Air
Transport and Tarom. It was also used by the air forces of the USSR,
Romania. Egypt, Hungary, Iraq, Czechoslovakia and North Korea among
others. A number of specialised variants were produced including the
AN-24P for firefighting and the AN-24T for cargo operations. A Chinese
version was produced by the Xian Aircraft Manufacturing Company as the
Y7. Production of the AN-24 ended in 1978 but many hundreds are still
operated in civil markings.
