A product of the Oleg K. Antonov design bureau based at Kiev in the
former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the AN-2 was produced in a
number of variants including the AN-2T with a longer undercarriage for
agricultural work, the AN-2M also an agricultural version but with a
square fin, the AN-2S ambulance version and the AN-2L fire-fighting
version. About 3,500 were built in the USSR before production was
transferred to PZL-WSK Mielec of Poland in the mid-sixties. Production
was also undertaken in China where it was designated Y-5 and about 1000
of these were built. Many thousands are still employed in Russia, Poland
and other Eastern European countries in agricultural, transport and para-dropping
roles. During the 1990’s a large number were acquired by private owners
in Western countries due to their low second hand price. They are now to
be seen at most self respecting air shows. A turboprop version, the
AN-3, was first flown in 1979. It is powered by a 1528shp(1139kW)
Glushnekov and has a maximum take-off weight of 12,787lb(5805kg). It is
not known if this version will enter production.
