Built by Avions de Transport Regional (ATR), a company established by
Aerospatiale and Aeritalia, the ATR 42 is a regional airliner which has
successfully penetrated the regional aircraft market. The ATR 42-320 is
powered by 2x 1900shp(1417kw) Pratt & Whitneys giving a cruising speed
of 309mph(498kmh). The ATR 42-500 first flew in 1994 powered by 2x
2160shp(1610kW) Pratt & Whitneys and with a maximum take-off weight of
41,005lb(18,600kg). This version has a superior cruising speed at
351mph(565kmh), a strengthened wing and fuselage and redesigned cabin
interior. It also has lower operating costs. The ATR 42 first entered
service with Air Littoral in 1985.
