The Pitts Special series goes back to 1947
and the first flight of the Pitts 190 “The Little Stinker”. Designed by
Curtiss H. Pitts at Gainesville, Florida, the Pitts 190 was acquired by
Betty Skelton who won the women’s title in the US National Aerobatic
Association competitions between 1948 and 1950. In 1962 plans were made
available to homebuilders and the aircraft was designated Pitts S-1C. It
had ailerons only on the lower wings and could be powered by engines up
to 150hp(111kW). The S-1D was also a plans built aircraft but had
ailerons on all four wings. The S-1E was the kit built version.
