The Ayres Corporation of Georgia bought the
rights to the Thrush series of agricultural aircraft from Rockwell in
1977. Rockwell had bought the Snow Aeronautical Corp. in 1965 and
continued to develop the range of Snow aircraft as the S-2R Thrush
Commander. Ayres have since produced a number of different models
including the S2R-T34 Turbo Thrush (224 built) first flown in 1979
powered by a 750shp(559kW) P & W and with a MTOW of 8200lb(3722kg). The
S2R-T15 Turbo Thrush (27 built) is powered by a 680shp(507kW) P & W and
the S2R-T11 (20 built) by a 500shp(373kW) P & W. The S2R-1820 Bull
Thrush (36 built) first flew in 1981 powered by a 1200hp(895kW) Wright
and had a MTOW of 10,000lb (4540kg). The S2R-T65 Turbo Thrush (14 built)
first flew in 1988 powered by a 1376shp(1026kW) P & W. In 1979 11
aircraft were fitted with a 600hp(447kW) PZL and designated S2R-R3S
Thrush. Quality Aerospace Inc. acquired the assets of the Ayres
Corporation in August 2001 and continue to offer the Turbo Thrush 400,
510 and 660 as described below. A number of piston-engined Thrush’s have
been converted to turboprops by Johnson Airspray Inc. of Argyle, Minn.
with the installation of the 751shp(560kW) Walter M601E-11.
