The Bell Aircraft Corporation was founded in 1935 by Lawrence D. Bell.
The prototype Bell XP-39 first flew in 1938 and was unusual in that the
engine was mounted in the fuselage above the wings allowing a 37mm
cannon to be mounted in the nose and fired through the propeller hub. A
large number of variants were used by the Allies during World War 11
including the P-39D(923 built), the P-39K(210 built), the P-39L(250
built), the P-39M(240 built) and the P-39N(2095 built). Today a handful
of Airacobras remain airworthy.
