The CL-601-1A Challenger was a big improvement on the earlier CL-600,
the main change being the installation of General Electric engines.
Canadair, which had been owned by the Canadian Government since 1976
when it had acquired it from the General Dynamics Corporation, was sold
to Bombardier in 1986. Bombardier subsequently developed the design as
the CL-601-3A (134 built) first flown in 1986 and which had upgraded
engines among other improvements and a maximum take-off weight of
43,100lb(19,567kg). A further development was the CL-601-3R(59 built)
which had an extended range of 4125miles(6638km) and a maximum take-off
weight of 45,100lb(20,475kg). Production of the CL-601 has now ended.
