The original G.111 was a two seat version of the the
earlier G.11 which was designed by Renee and Gaston Caudron. It first
flew in 1914 and was ordered into large scale production at the outbreak
of World War 1. Apart from production in France it was also built in
Italy by A.E.R. And in England by British Caudron. It was operated by
the Aviation Militaire as a reconnaissance aircraft until 1916 when it
was withdrawn from first line duties because of its vulnerability to
superior enemy aircraft. It was also operated by the RFC, RNAS and the
Italian air arm. It continued to perform training duties until the end
of World War 1 and many were then sold onto the civil market. A number
are exhibited in Air Museums and one is maintained in airworthy
condition.
