The Model 172 was the first in a series of aircraft
which was to become the most widely produced type of all time. Derived
from the Model 170, the Model 172 featured a tricycle undercarriage and
redesigned fin. The Model 172A (994 built) was introduced in 1959 and
featured a swept fin. The Model 172B (989 built) had a number of changes
including a shorter undercarriage, deeper fuselage, redesigned engine
cowling and new windshield. This model and all subsequent models were
also available as the Cessna 172 Skyhawk which was a deluxe version with
wheel spats and special paint finish. The Model 172C (810 built)
featured cosmetic improvements.
