The Model P172D Powermatic (69 built) was powered by
a 175hp(130kW) Continental and first flew in 1963,. Three examples were
built in France as the FP172D. Cessna ended production of the Model 172
series in 1986 due to outrageous product liability claims. The company
were being sued by many victims and their families involved in accidents
of Cessna built aircraft. Other manufacturers were similarly affected.
The company resumed production of their light aircraft range in 1995
after a new General Aviation Product Liability Reform Bill was passed by
the US government. The Model 172R (1350+ built) is powered by a
160hp(120kW) Lycoming IO-360 and has a maximum take-off weight of
2450lb(1111kg). The Model 172S(2200+ built) was introduced in 1998 and
is powered by a 180hp(135kW) Lycoming IO-360-L2A and has a maximum
take-off weight of 2550lb(1157kg). Illustrated below is a Cessna 172N
