The Cessna A-37B was developed from
the Cessna T-37C trainer as a counter insurgency aircraft for operations
in the Vietnam War. The initial version, the A-37A (25 built) were
modified from existing T-37C's and were used to test the type's
operational viability in the COIN role. The A-37A was evaluated in 1967
and the decision was made to order the more powerful A-37B which entered
service with the USAF and the South Vietnamese Air Force in 1968.
The type was exported to several countries including Chile (44),
Colombia (32), Peru (53), Honduras (17), Ecuador (28), Guatemala (13),
Uruguay (14), El Salvador (15) and the Dominican Republic (8) among others.
The South Vietnamese Air Force operated 254 examples although a large
number eventually fell into the hands of the communist Vietnam People's
Air Force. Production ended in 1973. The A-37B remains operational in
several South American countries and at least 6 are flown in civil
markings in the United States.
