The Model 185 was developed from the Model 180C with
a strengthened airframe and enlarged dorsal fin. A popular utility
aircraft especially with bush operators, the type can be operated on
floats as well as skis and an optional belly cargo pannier is also
available. The cargo pannier can carry 300lb (136kg). The Model 185A
(275 built) had minor improvements as had the Model 185B (78 built)
which was operated by the US Air Force as the U-17A. The Models 185C (89
built) and 185D (108 built) had minor improvements and were also used by
the US Air Force as the U-17A. The Model 185E (110 built) had minor
changes and was followed by the Model A185E Skywagon (723 built) which
was powered by a 300hp(223kW) Continental and had a maximum take-off
weight of 3300lb(1498kg). An agricultural version was the Model A185E
AgCarryall (108 built) which was introduced in 1971 and had a 571 litre
spray hopper and a maximum take-off weight of 3350lb(1521kg). The Model
A185F Skywagon (2358 built) had a three bladed propeller and a number
were operated by the US Air Force as the U-17B. Many thousands of Model
185’s remain active. Examples of the U-17 were supplied to countries
which were eligible for the MAP program. Production of the Model 185
series ended in 1985 when a total of 4,356 had been built including 497
U-17’s.
