Designed by Max Datwyler the MD3 was intended as a
basic training aircraft which could be assembled easily by licensees in
countries without a developed aviation industry. Apart from the MD3-160,
the MD3-115 was anticipated to be powered by a 110hp(82kW) Lycoming. The
first five were built in Switzerland by Datwyler before production was
moved to SME Aviation in Malaysia who had orders for 20 examples for the
Royal Malaysian Air Force and 20 for the Indonesian Air Force.
