The Davis Aircraft Corporation was founded
by Walter C. Davis in 1929 in Richmond, Indiana. Its first design was
the two seat Davis D-1 (23 built) which was first flown in 1929 powered
by a 60hp(44kW) Le Blond 5D. This was followed by the Davis D-1-66 (4
built) first flown in 1930 powered by an 85hp(63kW) Le Blond 5DF. The
Davis D-1-W (8 built) were conversions of existing D-1-K’s powered by a
125hp(93kW) Warner Scarab. A handful of Model D-1-K’s and D-1-W’s remain
airworthy.

Illustrated next is an example of the single seat
Davis V-3 (22 built) which was first flown in 1929 powered by a 60hp Le
Blond 5D. It had a range of 420miles(674km), a length of 18’6"(5.63m)
and a wingspan of 30’6"(9.28m) and was the predecessor of the Davis
D-1-K. The Davis V-3 was a development of the Vulcan V-3 which had been
built by Vulcan Aircraft. Davis acquired Vulcan Aircraft in 1929. Around
five have survived and it is thought that at least one of these remains
airworthy.
