A larger version of the Caribou, the
Buffalo was designed as a military transport, the original DHC-5A model
first flying in 1964. The Canadian Armed Forces operated 15 of these
early models, 24 went to the Brazilian Air Force and 16 to the Peruvian
Air Force. The DHC-5D was a more powerful version and saw service with a
number of African air forces including Cameroun (3); Egypt (10); Kenya
(8); Mauritania (1); Sudan (4); Tanzania (6); Togo (2); Zaire (3) and
Zambia (7). A small number are still operated in civil markings in
Africa.
