Originally powered by a 750cc Douglas motorcycle
engine the Hummingbird was designed as an entrant in the light aeroplane
trials of 1923 sponsored by the Daily Mail. Eight were ordered by the
RAF as light communications aircraft with the remainder being sold on
the civil market, including three which went to Australia. One example
survives with the Shuttleworth Trust at Old Warden. A replica was built
in Canada during the 1960’s powered by a 40hp (30kW) Continental A40.
