The Katana trainer was designed and built in Austria
by Diamond Aircraft Industries, formerly HOAC, under the designation
DV-20-A1. The Canadian subsidiary, Diamond Aircraft Corporation of
Ontario, began building the Katana as the DA-20A-1 in 1994 for the North
American market. European production ended in 1996. The DA-20-A2
featured an improved airframe and the DA-20 Katana 100 was first flown
in 1999 powered by a 100hp(74kW) Rotax 912S and with a maximum take-off
weight of 1653lb(750kg). The Katana has proven to be a popular and
economic trainer. A Diamond DA-20-A1 is illustrated below.
