The C-123B Provider(302 built), first flown in 1953, was a tactical military transport which saw service with the USAF as well as the air arms of Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, South Vietnam and the Philippines. The C-123K variant was the C-123B with the installation of 2x 2850lb.s.t.(12.65kN) General Electrics in underwing pods which greatly improved the aircraft’s performance. The UC-123K (34 converted from C-134K’s) was for the defoliation role in Vietnam. The type was retired from US military service in 1979 and a number were sold to freight operators in South America.
