In June 1996 Fairchild Aerospace of Texas,USA,
acquired an 80% shareholding in Dornier which itself had produced
aircraft since 1922. Now a subsidiary of Fairchild, all developments
after the Dornier 328 are designated Fairchild Aerospace products. The
328-300JET is a jet-engined version of the Dornier 328. Despite a
healthy order book Fairchild Dornier was declared insolvent in March
2002. Production ceased and all of the company’s workforce of more than
1800 were laid off in May. AvCraft Aircraft resumed production in 2003
but filed for bankruptcy in 2005. Production ended in 2006. The
Fairchild Dornier 728-100 is worth mentioning here although this
aircraft was never flown. A promising design, it was a casualty of the
demise of Dornier.

The prototype of the new Model 728-100 regional jet
was rolled out at Oberpfaffenhohen on March 21 2002. Unfortunately the
high costs of development of this new design contributed to the downfall
of the company which went into receivership shortly afterwards. The
aircraft remains at the company’s base along with three partially
completed fuselages. In March 2003 AvCraft Aircraft acquired the
complete 328 program and hoped to restart production later in the year.
In July 2003, D’Long International of Xinjiang, China bought the rights
to the 728 program. The new company is named Fairchild Dornier
Aeroindustries.
