Sherman Fairchild resigned from the Fairchild
Aviation Corporation in 1931 after a controlling interest was bought by
the American Aviation Corporation. He subsequently acquired the
Kreider-Reisner Aircraft Company which had been founded in Maryland in
1923 and which had become a subsidiary of the Fairchild Aviation
Corporation in 1929. It was renamed the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation
and the new company continued with the development of the existing
Kreider- Reisner designs including the C-2/3/4/6 Challenger series. The
C-6 was re-designated Fairchild KR-21 and the C-4 was re-designated
Fairchild KR-31. A small number of KR-21’s remain airworthy.
