The Fairchild Swearingen Corporation was formed in
1981 by the amalgamation of Fairchild and the Swearingen Aviation
Corporation which had been a subsidiary of Fairchild since 1971. The
original Swearingen Aircraft Company was formed in 1959 by Ed Swearingen
and by the early 1960’s was converting existing Beech D.50 Twin Bonanzas
to the Swearingen Excalibur 800 by the installation of 2x 400hp(298kW)
Lycomings and with a maximum take-off weight of 7600lb(3450kg).
Swearingen’s first new design was the SA-26 Merlin 1 similarly powered
to the Excalibur 800. This was followed by the SA26-T Merlin 11 which
first flew in 1965. The production version was the SA26-T Merlin 11A(99
built) powered by 2x 550shp(410kW) Pratt & Whitneys and with a maximum
take-off weight of 9300lb(4222kg)This was superseded by the more
powerful Merlin 11B. About 20 Merlin 11A’s and 60 Merlin 11B’s remain
airworthy.
