The prototype Gannet first flew in 1949 and
a number of different versions were subsequently built including the
AS.1(181
built), T.2(38 built), AEW.3(44 built), AS.4(75 built) and T.5(8 built). The aircraft entered service
with the Fleet Air Arm in 1955 as a
carrier-borne ant-submarine warfare aircraft. The type served with the
armed forces of the UK, Indonesia (16 AS.4 plus 2 T.5 which were
refurbished AS.1's), Germany (15 AS.4 plus 1 T.5) and Australia (33 AS.1
plus 3 T.2). The Gannet was retired from Australian service in 1969 and
from UK service in 1978. A total of 349 Gannets of all variants were
built. It is believed
that only two remain airworthy in civil markings.
