The Swordfish prototype was first flown in 1934 and
the type was built in four marks including the Mk.1(989 built) which was
powered by a 690hp(514kW) Bristol and which entered service with the
Fleet Air Arm in 1936. The Mk.11 was followed by the Mk.111(320 built)
which carried a radar radome between the landing gear units. A small
number of Mk.11’s were converted to Mk.1V standard by the installation
of an enclosed cockpit for Canadian operations. The Swordfish gave
stalwart service during World War 11 and four remain airworthy.
