Designed by Doug Fawcett and Luigi Pellerini and
built by Fawcett Aviation, the Fawcett 120 was originally powered by a
130hp(96kW) de Havilland Gypsy Major. It was conceived as a replacement
for the Tiger Moths then being operated by the Illawarra Flying School,
a subsidiary of Fawcett Aviation. The Australian Army evaluated the
Fawcett 120 alongside the Cessna 180 for the AOP role and they
eventually decided to buy the latter. The design was resurrected in 1990
as the Illawarra Trainer and had the more powerful Lycoming engine
installed. In the late 1990’s the Fawcett 120 was installed in an
Australian museum but it remains in airworthy condition and the fact
that the plans and jigs are still available makes a return of this
design perfectly feasible.
