Folland Aircraft Ltd. was founded in Hampshire in
1937 by H.P.Folland who had previously been chief engineer with the
Gloster Aircraft Company. The Gnat was developed from the Folland Midge
light fighter prototype and entered service with the RAF as the T.1
trainer in 1962. A single seat fighter version saw service with
Finland(13) and with India where they were licence built by Hindustan
Aeronautics Ltd. The T.1 was retired from RAF service in 1979 and a
small number are now flying in civil markings.
