Henry Ford formed an aviation division of his Ford
Motor Company in Michigan in 1925. The first of the Tri-Motor series,
the Model 3-AT first flew in 1926 and was quickly followed by the Model
4-AT-A(14 built). Improvements to the design resulted in the 4-AT-B(35
built), the 4-AT-C (1 built) and the 4-AT-D(3 built). A larger and more
powerful Model 5-AT followed in 1928 although production of the earlier
4-AT continued until 1929. A number of versions followed, mainly
conversions of the 4-AT series. In 1966 an upgraded version of the
venerable Tri-Motor was flown as the Bushmaster 2000. A total of 222
Tri-Motors of all models were eventually built and a handful are still
airworthy.
