Aircraft design and manufacture was prohibited in
Japan from the end of World War 11 until 1952. Fuji Heavy Industries was
founded in 1953 and began building the Beech 45 Mentor under licence.
The company developed the Mentor as the LM-1 five seat utility aircraft
powered by a 225hp(168kW) Continental. The Fuji KM was similar to the
LM-1 but powered by a 340hp (254kW) Lycoming IGSO-480 and this type was
used mainly as a civil trainer. The LM-2 was a higher powered version of
the LM-1, and examples of both versions served with the Japanese Ground
Self Defence Forces until 1982. Several examples of the LM-1 and LM-2
are now flying in civil markings.
