One of the most important fighters of the post-war
era, the Phantom 11 first flew in 1958 as the XF4H-1 and went into
production in 1959 as the F-4A (45 built) powered by 2x
16,150lb.s.t.(71.86kN) General Electrics. The F-4B (649 built) had the
17,000lb.s.t. General Electrics and entered service with the US Navy in
1960. The F-4C (635 built) was the version for the US Air Force and was
followed by the F-4D. The F-4E (1405 built) was the major production
version powered by 2x 17,900lb.s.t.(79.65kN) General Electrics and the
F-4F (175 built) was similar to the F-4E for the Luftwaffe. The Royal
Navy operated the F-4K as the Phantom FG.1. The F-4N (228 converted) was
a conversion of the F-4B with improved avionics and strengthened
structure. The Phantom 11 saw extensive service in the Vietnam War and
has been operated by many air forces including those of Egypt, Greece,
Iran, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Spain and Turkey. A small number of
F-4D’s are operated in civil markings in the United States.
