Classic Fighter Industries of Paine Field, Everett,
Washington began construction of the first replica Me- 262 in 1993. The
General Electric engines are much lighter than the Jumo turbojets which
powered the original Me-262’s. The Me-262 was the first jet fighter to
achieve service status and was first flown in 1941 as the Me-262A single
seat fighter. The type entered service with the Luftwaffe in 1944 and
when production ended in April 1945, 1,380 had been built. The Me-262B
two seat trainer was first flown in 1944 and replaced the rear fuel tank
with the instructor’s cockpit. Only five replicas are being built at
Paine Field and most have been sold. They are a mix of single and two
seat models.
