The YS-11 was developed by a consortium of Japanese
manufacturers including Fuji, Kawasaki, Showa, Shin Meiwa and
Mitsubishi. The group was later named NAMC (Nihon Aeroplane
Manufacturing Company) in 1959. The prototype YS-11 first flew in 1962
and went into production as the YS-11-100 (48 built) with a maximum
take-off weight of 51,808lb(23,520kg). Designed mainly with the domestic
market in mind, the YS-11 was nonetheless offered to foreign airlines in
the YS-11-200 variant. The YS-11-300 (31 built) was the passenger /
freight version with seating for 46 passengers and 540 cu. ft. of cargo
space. The YS-11-400 (8 built) was a pure freighter with a large cargo
door. Versions with higher maximum take-off weights were the YS-11-500
(2 built) and the YS-11-600 (8 built). The type also served with the
JASDF and JMSDF in the transport and ECM training role. At least 50
remain airworthy.
