Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Company (NAMC) was
formed in 1961 to build the Yakovlev Yak-18 trainer under licence. This
aircraft was designated CJ-5 (379 built) and made its first flight in
1954. Production ended in 1958. The CJ-6 was the successor to the CJ-5
and the prototype made its first flight in 1958 powered by a
145hp(108kW) Mikulin. In 1960 it flew with a 260hp(194kW) Ivchenko
before making its first flight with the 285hp Zhuzhou in 1961. It
entered production in 1962 as the CJ-6 and was superseded in 1965 by the
improved CJ-6A. The CJ-6B (10 built) was an armed version. A development
of the CJ-6A was the Nanchang Haiyan agricultural aircraft which first
flew in 1985 powered by a 345hp(257kW) Zhuzhou and with a maximum
take-off weight of 4486lb(2035kg). A large number of Nanchang CJ-6A’s
have been registered in the West in recent years.
