The N3N-3 was designed by the US Navy’s Bureau of
Aeronautics as a primary trainer. The first production model was the
N3N-1 (179 built) powered by a 220hp (164kW) Wright. Eventually all
these early models were re-engined with the 235hp Wright. They were
operated in the training role throughout World War 11 and although the
majority were retired and sold onto the civil market in 1945, a handful
were still being used by the US Navy until 1961, the last biplane to be
used by any of the US armed services. A healthy number remain airworthy
out of about 190 survivors.
