Designed by Robert B. Noorduyn, the prototype
Norseman 1 made its first flight in 1935 powered by a 420hp(313kW)
Wright. This was followed by the Norseman 11 (3 built) which had minor
changes and the Norseman 111 (2 built) which was powered by a
450hp(336kW) Pratt & Whitney. The Norseman 1V (13 built) was a pre- war
version for the USAAF powered by the 550hp P & W. The Norseman V1 (749
built) was a wartime version for the USAAF and the RCAF. These aircraft
had been built by Noorduyn Aviation Ltd. which had been founded in
Montreal in 1935. After the war, Noorduyn Norseman Aircraft continued
production of the Norseman V until 1959. CCF (Canadian Car & Foundry)
built one example of the Norseman V11 with a longer cabin. In American
military service the Norseman was designated UC-64. A small number
remain airworthy in Canada and the United States, some still in
commercial use.
