The Fieldmaster was designed by Desmond Norman,
co-designer of the popular BN-2 Islander, for agricultural and
firefighting applications. A promising but ultimately unsuccessful
design, the Fieldmaster featured a titanium hopper of 2555 litres (562
imp.gals.) capacity in the agricultural role, and a scoop system which
allowed it to refill its water tank in flight by way of a retractable
boom which extended below the water surface when the aircraft’s wheels
were 10’ above the surface enabling the tank to be refilled in one
minute. Until recently several Fieldmasters were still in use on
agricultural contracts abroad.
