The F-100A Super Sabre (203 built) was the first
operational fighter capable of supersonic speed in level flight. The
prototype made its first flight in 1953 and early production models were
powered by a 15,000lb.s.t. (66.75kN) Pratt & Whitney. This was followed
by the F-100C (476 built) which had in-flight refueling capability and
six underwing weapons pylons. The F-100D (1274 built) was a dedicated
fighter bomber version with the same Pratt & Whitney engine as the
F-100F, which although designed as a trainer, was also capable of
undertaking the fighter bomber role. The Super Sabre saw action in
Vietnam and the type was operated by the air forces of France (85 F-100D
and 15 F-100F’s), Turkey (131 F-100D and 50 F-100F’s) and Denmark (48
F-100D’s and 24 F-100F’s). A few F-100F’s remain airworthy in civil
markings in the United States.
