The prototype Sabreliner first flew in 1958 as the
T-39 military high speed transport and trainer. Initial production was
of the T-39A (143 built) which entered service with the US Air Force in
1960. The T-39B (6 built) were specialist trainers and the T-39D (10
built) was for the US Navy. The civil Model 40 had a third window on
each side of the fuselage and apart from improved avionics and interior
was very similar to the military T-39. A few Model 40’s were designated
Model 40A with a maximum take-off weight of 19,612lb (8903kg). At least
70 Sabreliner 40’s and ex-military T-39’s remain airworthy in civil
markings.
