Developed as a single seat fighter version of the
AT-6 Texan, the P-64 was armed with 2x 7.62mm machine guns and 2x 20mm
cannon. It was intended for export and six examples were ordered by
Thailand and were being transported to that country by sea when Japan
invaded Thailand in 1941 and the ship was intercepted at Hawaii. The
aircraft were returned to the United States where they were used as
advanced trainers. One is still extant and believed to be maintained in
flying condition.
