The P.166 used the wings from the P.136 married to a
new fuselage. The P.166 (3 built) was followed by the P.166-AL1 in 1959
and the P.166-BL2 (6 built) which made its first flight in 1962 powered
by 2x 380hp(283kW) Lycomings and with a maximum take-off weight of
8337lb(3784kg). A military version of the AL1 was the P.166-ML1 (51
built) which was operated by the Italian Air Force in the liaison and
transport roles. The military version had a strengthened floor for
freight carrying as well as a larger main loading door. The South
African Air Force bought 20 examples of the P.166S for coastal patrol
duties and these were given the name Albatross. The P.166-CL2 (4 built)
were fitted with thirteen seats and had a maximum take-off weight of
8708lb(3953kg). A handful of these piston powered P.166’s remain
airworthy.
