Pilatus Flugzeugwerke A.G. was formed in 1939 and built the prototype of a six seat utility aircraft designated Pilatus SB-2 Pelican which first flew in 1944. The first successful design was the P-2 which went into production for the Swiss Air Force. It was used as an advanced trainer with full night flying instrumentation and was also used for combat training with underwing bombs and rockets. They were retired in 1982 and a large number were sold onto the civil market. A small number remain airworthy.
