The all metal STOL PC-6 Porter was the first in a
long line of developed versions which have been a large success for
Pilatus. Designed as a sturdy utility transport it has been used in
several roles including air ambulance, freighter, crop spraying, target
tug, air survey, search and rescue, paradropping and water bombing. Its
versatility, rugged construction and excellent short field performance
has gained the Porter orders from the civil and military sectors. The
PC-6/340 was followed by the PC-6/350 which first flew in 1961 powered
by a 350hp (261kW) Lycoming. Some of these piston powered examples were
eventually converted to turboprop power. A small number of piston
Porters remain airworthy.
