The PA-18 Super Cub series is without doubt the most
famous type from Piper’s stable. Based on the PA-11 Cub Special, the
PA-18 had a larger fin, flaps and all metal wings. The PA-18-105 (200*
built) was powered by a 105hp(78kW) Lycoming and had a larger tailplane
and no flaps.

The PA-18-135(750* built) first flew in 1952 and was
powered by a 135hp(100kW) Lycoming. Military versions were the L-18C
(838 built) powered by a 95hp(70kW) Continental, most of which served
with the US Army with 108 being supplied to smaller air arms under the
Military Aid Program. The L-21A (150 built) was powered by a 125hp
Lycoming and some of these were redesignated TL-21A’s for use in the
training role. The L-21B (584 built) was powered by a 135hp Lycoming.
Large numbers of these lower powered Super Cubs remain active. |
